Hi, my name is Kenzie Carlstrom; I’m 20 years old following my dreams of seeing the world with water sports. I have grown up partially in British Columbia, Canada and Oregon, USA. Living in the Northwest among rivers, mountains, snow and wind I have grown to appreciate and cherish nature’s natural beauties.
When and where did you start SUP?
For me standing on an old windsurfing board with a wooden canoe paddle is where “SUP” started for me. The competitive side of SUPing started at the beginning of 2015 while I was living on the east coast of Australia.
Which sports did you practice before? And now?
From a young age I competed in artistic gymnastics, ski raced, played soccer, competed in contemporary dance. I now compete in freestyle kiteboarding, practice barre, and of course stand up paddle often.
How have the sports you did before helped with SUP?
I give Gymnastics huge credit in helping me with SUPing (and all other sports). It is a great, if not the best, foundation for strength flexiblitiy, coordination special awareness and discipline.
What attracts you to SUP?
SUP is a balance for me, if the wind is not perfect for kiting, there is always SUPing! It can be social, relaxing, adventurous or exhilarating and its simple, all you need is a board and a paddle; that is what attracts me to SUP.
SUP race, SUP surf or something else?
SUP race, downwinding, whitewater, yoga, and the odd surf….you name it and I’m keen to try!
SUP is booming, do you think this is a fad or a change in attitudes over the long term?
SUP is definitely booming, and is it here to stay, I think so. If we can keep the initial cost down for beginners, we can all enjoy the water!
